Powerking vs Red Bull: Challenger Against the Original
Dela
Powerking and Red Bull are closer than most people expect: the same 250 ml can and the same 80 mg of caffeine. Red Bull carries 1000 mg of taurine, Powerking about 950 mg. Red Bull is vegan and wins on brand recognition; Powerking goes wider on fruit flavours and on sugar-free options, but its label notes it may contain traces of gluten.

Is Powerking the same as Red Bull?
No, but on caffeine and can size they are identical, which is why they are so often compared.
Both are 250 ml carbonated energy drinks with 80 mg of caffeine, and both build on the same taurine-and-caffeine template that defined the category. Powerking is the Swedish-market challenger: produced in the Netherlands, priced to compete, and built around fruit flavours rather than the single signature taste that Red Bull made famous. Red Bull is the global original, sold in the same recognisable can everywhere and extended through a long run of Editions rather than a fruit line. Treating them as interchangeable works for caffeine planning. It does not work for taste, allergen notes or shelf positioning.
Which has more caffeine, Powerking or Red Bull?
Neither — both contain 80 mg of caffeine per 250 ml can.
That is worth saying plainly, because the assumption that a challenger brand must be weaker or stronger is common and wrong here. At 80 mg per 250 ml, both work out at 320 mg per litre, which puts them well above the EU threshold of 150 mg per litre. Both therefore carry the statement "High caffeine content. Not recommended for children or pregnant or breast-feeding women" under EU Regulation 1169/2011. If you want substantially more caffeine in one container you are looking at a different shelf: a 330 ml NOCCO at 180 mg, a 330 ml Celsius at 200 mg, or roughly 160 mg in a 500 ml Monster. We compared one of those pairings in NOCCO vs Red Bull.
How much taurine is in Powerking and Red Bull?
Red Bull lists 1000 mg of taurine per 250 ml can and Powerking about 950 mg.
A 50 mg difference in a 250 ml can is a rounding detail in practice, and we would not make a buying decision on it. It does tell you something about how the two are built: Powerking is formulated to the same template rather than to a deliberately different one. If taurine is something you would rather avoid altogether, neither of these is your can — the BCAA side of the category is where you look, and Clean Drink in particular states that it contains no taurine at all.
Does Powerking contain gluten?
Powerking's label notes that it may contain traces of gluten, so it is not a drink to hand to someone with coeliac disease.
This is the one place where the two cans genuinely part company for a customer with a dietary requirement, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a footnote. A traces note usually reflects the production environment rather than a gluten ingredient, but for anyone who has to avoid gluten strictly, a traces note is a no. Red Bull makes no such statement on the information we hold, and is declared vegan; Powerking's vegan status is not stated, so we do not claim it either way. If you need a drink that states gluten-free and lactose-free outright, the Clean Drink and NOCCO ranges both do.
Which has the better flavour range?
Powerking is the stronger range if you want fruit and sugar-free choice; Red Bull is stronger if you want one taste that never changes plus a rotation of Editions.
Powerking runs Energy Drink and Energy Drink Sugarfree alongside Pear Sugarfree, Raspberry Sugarfree and Lemon Lime Sugarfree, then Passion, Mango, Strawberry and Watermelon. Three of the nine are sugar-free fruit flavours, which is unusual in this part of the category and the main reason the range keeps earning fridge space. The fruit variants are sweeter and softer in carbonation than the classic energy taste, and Pear in particular drinks more like a Swedish soft drink than an energy drink.
Red Bull's strategy is the opposite. The core taste stays fixed across Original, Original Sugarfree and Original Zero Sugar, and the variety comes from the Editions: Blue, Purple, Lilac, Pink, White, Sea Blue, Apricot, Summer Edition and Summer Edition Sugarfree, Spring Edition Cherry Sakura, The Red Edition Watermelon, Green Edition Dragon Fruit, Tropical Edition and White Peach. The Editions are fruit-forward and less bitter on the finish than the original, which is what has pulled in drinkers who never liked the classic can. The trade-off is availability: Editions come and go, while Powerking's line sits still.
Which one do customers actually buy?
Both sell, and in our own order data over the past twelve months they sell at different ends of the same shelf.
Red Bull Blue Edition is the single best-selling line in our range, which says as much about the Editions strategy as about the brand: the fruit-led Edition outsells everything else we stock. The Powerking sugar-free variants are in the top tenth of lines by number of orders, and they move in a different pattern — steadier, more often in tray and pallet quantities, and more often to shops and gyms than to individual households. Read that as two jobs rather than one contest. Red Bull brings people to the fridge; Powerking gives them a fruit or sugar-free option at a competitive price once they are standing in front of it. The broader shift behind both is covered in the sugar-free drinks trend.
Best for…
- A shop fridge or kiosk: Red Bull first for recognition, Powerking second for price and fruit choice. Most retailers we supply stock both.
- A long drive: either, at 80 mg a can. Red Bull is easier to find at a service station; Powerking is cheaper by the tray if you plan ahead.
- Cutting sugar without cutting the ritual: Powerking Sugarfree, Pear Sugarfree or Red Bull Zero Sugar.
- An office fridge: Red Bull Original Sugarfree. Moderate caffeine, and nobody needs the label explained.
- Resale in a gym: Powerking sugar-free variants, which move steadily by the tray, alongside a stronger line for pre-workout buyers.
- A strictly gluten-free household: neither Powerking nor an unverified label — choose a range that states gluten-free.
Frequently asked questions
Is Powerking a Swedish energy drink?
Powerking is a brand long established on the Swedish market, and the drink is produced in the Netherlands. It comes in 250 ml carbonated cans with 80 mg of caffeine and about 950 mg of taurine, in a classic energy flavour plus a fruit line. Several variants are sugar-free, which is a large part of its appeal in Sweden.
Does Powerking have the same caffeine as Red Bull?
Yes. Both Powerking and Red Bull contain 80 mg of caffeine per 250 ml can, which is 320 mg per litre. Because that is above 150 mg per litre, both must carry the EU statement "High caffeine content. Not recommended for children or pregnant or breast-feeding women" under Regulation 1169/2011.
Is Powerking cheaper than Red Bull?
Powerking is stocked as a value alternative rather than a premium line, which is why shops tend to carry it alongside Red Bull rather than instead of it. Actual prices move with pack size, market and duty, so we quote current per-can, per-tray and per-pallet pricing on request instead of publishing a figure that dates quickly.
Which Red Bull has no sugar?
Red Bull Original Sugarfree and Red Bull Original Zero Sugar both contain no sugar, and Summer Edition Sugarfree is the sugar-free option within the Editions. Red Bull Original contains sugar, as do most of the Editions. On the Powerking side, the Sugarfree variants — including Pear, Raspberry and Lemon Lime — contain no sugar.
Is Red Bull vegan?
Red Bull is declared vegan. Powerking's vegan status is not stated on the information we hold, so we do not claim it either way — check the current can or ask us and we will check the specification with the supplier. Powerking's label does carry a note that it may contain traces of gluten.
Can you mix Powerking and Red Bull in the same order?
Yes. Orders from Nordic Refreshment can combine brands freely, by the can, the tray or the pallet, which is how most shops and gyms buy: a core of Red Bull, a fruit and sugar-free tier from Powerking, and a stronger line for pre-workout buyers. B2B pricing is quoted on the mix rather than per brand.
