Gym Nutrition 101: Protein, BCAA, and Hydration Explained Simply

The gym floor is full of jargon. Protein. BCAAs. Electrolytes. Leucine. If you're new to training seriously, figuring out what you actually need — and what's just marketing — can be overwhelming. Here's a simple, no-nonsense breakdown.

Protein: The Foundation

Protein is the building block of muscle. When you train, you create small tears in muscle fibres. Protein provides the amino acids your body uses to repair and grow those fibres — making you stronger and leaner over time.

How much do you need? A widely accepted guideline for active people is 1.6–2.2g of protein per kg of bodyweight per day. For a 75kg person, that's 120–165g of protein daily.

Best sources: Meat, fish, eggs, dairy, and protein supplements. Barebells milkshakes and bars are a convenient way to add 20–24g of protein without cooking.

BCAAs: The Performance Ingredient

BCAAs (Branched-Chain Amino Acids — leucine, isoleucine, valine) are specific amino acids that your muscles use directly during exercise. Unlike most amino acids that go through the liver first, BCAAs are metabolised directly in muscle tissue.

What they do: Reduce muscle breakdown during training, speed up recovery, and help preserve lean mass during calorie restriction.

When to take them: Before or during training. NOCCO BCAA+ contains 3,000mg per can — enough to meaningfully support your training. Learn more: What Is BCAA and Why Is It in NOCCO?

Hydration: The Most Underrated Factor

A 2% drop in hydration levels can reduce performance by up to 10%. Most people train in a mild state of dehydration without realising it. Water is the foundation, but electrolytes — sodium, potassium, magnesium — matter for sessions longer than an hour or in hot conditions.

Signs you're dehydrated: Headache, reduced coordination, early fatigue, muscle cramps.

Vitamin Well Recover contains magnesium and B-vitamins alongside hydration — making it useful for post-workout recovery as well as general hydration. See our Vitamin Well comparison guide.

The Simple Daily Framework

  • Hit your daily protein target through food first, supplements second
  • Add BCAAs around your training window (NOCCO BCAA+ is the easiest way)
  • Drink water consistently throughout the day — don't wait until you're thirsty
  • Use Vitamin Well as a light vitamin and hydration supplement
